MRI scanners saved by EU u-turn

The European Parliament today approved a request by the European Commission to postpone and review a controversial health and safety directive on electro magnetic fields which would have restricted the use of Europe's high-tech MRI scanners, used to detect early signs of cancer amongst other things.
Liberal Democrat MEP Liz Lynne, Vice President of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee, had campaigned hard for a postponement of the directive after outcries from leading scientists and experts across the European Union.

Time to raise awareness of Europe-Wide Emergency number

Speaking on the first European day to mark the European emergency number 112 (therefore: 11 February), Diana Wallis MEP, who campaigns to raise awareness of the number, said:
"The written declaration I piloted through the European Parliament achieved historic support amongst fellow MEPs. The Commission has understood this and has included 112 in several recent initiatives, but Member States are still not showing the necessary enthusiasm to take this issue forward.

Climate change proposals: an opportunity not a threat

During their summit in March 2007 EU leaders agreed to reduce CO2 emissions to at least 20 percent below 1990 levels and to have renewable sources account for 20 percent of energy production by 2020. Today the European Commission has outlined in detail how the Member States can reach their targets.

Lib Dems welcome Pharma Crackdown

"Although any sectoral inquiry stresses that sector it is about time the rumours stopped and a better understanding of what is and is not the situation becomes known. I am glad it also covers generic companies because too often pharma are painted as ‘greedy’, forgetting they do all the research and development, and generics as ‘good’, forgetting they copy drugs developed by others and do none of the research that brings new products to market".

BBC Exposé Shows Urgent Action Needed To End Cage bed Horror

EU Demands Hospital Bug Screening For All Health Workers

New measures must be taken to protect healthcare workers from healthcare acquired infections such as MRSA, according to a report to be adopted today by the European Parliament. The report focuses on the need to reduce workplace-related diseases and accidents across the EU and in particular to better protect vulnerable workers such as those in healthcare.

UK 'worst in Europe for Asthma'

Asthma prevalence is thought to have doubled in the last ten years, with higher risk of occurrence in the UK than most European countries. While an estimated 30 million Europeans suffer from the disease, management of it is poor in many Member States according to a new report.
